How to Prepare for a Brand Photography Session in Cairns
The shoot's booked. Now you're wondering what to wear, where to stand and whether you'll look stiff in every frame.
Here's the good news — most of the work happens before the shoot, not in front of the lens. A little planning means you'll walk away with images you'll actually use, not fifty versions of the same polite smile. Here's how to prepare for a brand photography session in Cairns, from the questions to answer first to what happens after.

Start with where your images will live
Before you think about outfits or locations, think about where your images will be used. It's the question that shapes everything else.
A website needs wide images with space for text to sit over the top. Instagram favours portrait crops. Your Google Business Profile, proposals, email signature and business cards all need something slightly different again.
Write a short list of every place your images will appear, and any gaps you're trying to fill — a new About page, a service you don't have photos for, a team that's grown. Your pre-shoot questionnaire covers this too, but arriving with your own list helps us build a shot list around what you actually need.
Choose a location that tells your story
For most businesses, the most honest backdrop is the place where the work happens — your clinic, studio, office, workshop or yard. It shows people what it will be like to walk through your door.
When we photographed Cairns Crane Hire, we shot at their yard with their team — the people, the machinery and the place the business runs from. That's what their clients want to see before they pick up the phone.
If your brand leans outdoors, Cairns gives you options — the Esplanade, a favourite café, the rainforest edge or the water. Depending on your package, you can choose between one and three locations, and we'll help you settle on the right mix once you've booked.
Work with the tropical light (and the heat)
Far North Queensland light is beautiful, but it's strong. The middle of the day brings harsh shadows, squinting and the hottest part of the day — not ideal for anyone.
Early morning and late afternoon give softer, warmer light and a more comfortable shoot. In the wet season, mornings are often the safer bet, before afternoon storms have a chance to roll in.
A few practical things help in the humidity:
- Bring water and a small towel or blotting papers
- Choose breathable fabrics
- Pack a spare top if you'll be moving between locations
- Plan an indoor backup in case the weather turns
Plan your wardrobe around your brand
Think about how your clients see you — then go one step more polished. If you usually work in scrubs, a uniform or hi-vis, include it. It's part of your story.
Look to your brand colours for direction. You don't need to match your logo head to toe, but tones that sit comfortably alongside your palette make your images feel cohesive across your website and socials.
A few guidelines:
- Avoid busy prints and other brands' logos
- Steam everything the morning of the shoot — humidity is unkind to creases
- Bring two or three options, so we can change things up across the session
Bring props that show how you work
Props turn a portrait into a story. They show people what you do and how you do it.
A laptop with your website open, the notebook you use with clients, the tools of your trade, your products, the books on your shelf — small details like these make your images far more useful when you're explaining your services.
For trade and equipment businesses, your vehicles, gear and safety equipment are props too.

Bring your team (if they're part of the story)
If clients deal with your team, they'll want to see them. Let us know who's joining when you book, so we can plan individual and group shots into the shot list. Brief your team on the plan and wardrobe early, so nobody turns up in the wrong shirt.
What happens on the day
This isn't a Vogue photoshoot. There are no wind machines and no awkward poses. We arrive with a shot list built from your pre-shoot questionnaire and guide you through the session with gentle prompts. A lot of the best images come from simply doing what you do — talking with a client, working at your desk, walking through your space.
Most people feel a little self-conscious for the first ten minutes. Then they forget the camera is there. Cairns Crane Hire described the session as relaxed and enjoyable.
After the shoot
Your edited gallery arrives within two to three weeks. The Content Session gives you 50 high-resolution images from a two-hour shoot at one location. The Content Overhaul gives you 300 from a full day across up to three locations, with drone imagery where it suits. Both include commercial usage rights.
Then comes the good part — putting them to work. Refresh your website, update your Google Business Profile, add a new headshot to your email signature and plan a few weeks of social posts. If you'd like help, we can update your website with your new images for you.
Brand photography sessions range from $900 to $2,500 + GST, depending on the length of the session, the number of locations and the number of images.
